Go Blog Social: Des Moines

This past weekend I was able to attend a Go Blog Social event in Des Moines, Iowa at Hotel Renovo for two days of networking, swag bags and speakers. Sure, I could have probably found a conference closer to my home state of Florida but who doesn’t like to be the girl that gets to say she traveled the farthest to attend the event? I like to one-up people like that.

I have to say I couldn’t have found a better event to kick-start my journey back into blogging. I learned so much on the first night. From making my own flower crown to getting a henna tattoo and my hair braided - these are life lessons, people! Not to mention we had some great bra fittings by Peach. I’ve decided I want my next birthday party to exactly replicate this evening – bra fittings and all.

On top of that, the girls that attended were all seriously amazing. My favorites – because it’s my blog and I can have favorites if I want too – were the lovely Bayley and Meg over at M&B. These gals really knew how to make a girl feel welcome and we initially bonded when not one of us made the 7:00am workout class, for obvious reasons. Obvious meaning who wants to workout? Let alone at 7:00am.

While the first night was all about the glam, the next day was down to business. The girls over at Go Blog Social had great speakers from Cassandra Monroe to discuss pitching & freelance work to Karla Walsh, a digital strategist at Meredith Corp. The diversity of topics was extremely valuable since not every person in the room was a blogger & each offered something new.

Some of the key takeaways I learned was that it’s okay not to be on every social platform (sorry guys, I don’t think I’ll ever get the hang of SnapChat) and white space is essential in Instagram photos. See my latest post (aren’t you impressed?!)

I lot times I ask myself, how often should I post on social media? Well, Katie Patterson over at Happy Medium had me covered. She shared this great breakdown of standard postings per social platform:

Facebook: 1 post every other day
Twitter: 2 original posts daily, 2 interactions daily
Instagram: 2 posts per week
LinkedIn: 2 posts per week
SnapChat: 1 story per week
Pinterest: pin 3 times per week.

So if you’re looking for an event in the Mid-West area I highly recommend checking them out. You’ll meet great people, receive some fun swag and you too could get your own henna tattoo!

P.S. I’m going to Florida Blog Con on September 24th – let me know if you’re planning on going and maybe we can grab some coffee!
