A Dog Remembered

Friday was one of those days that you wouldn’t wish upon anyone, especially someone you love as much as I love my Nana. After 11 years of life, my Nana’s beloved standard poodle, Jax, passed on. After taking some final photos of him, we drove to the veterinary clinic to say our goodbyes.

Loosing a pet is, I believe, one of the hardest things a person can go through. But I also think it was the last kind act we could do for him to take away his pain and we were with him until the very end.

While it can be all to easy to wallow in the grief, it takes much more strength to remember the great life you gave your pet, and how much they gave you in return. As my Nana kept saying “we needed him, and he needed us.” So instead of thinking about life without him, I like to remember the joy he brought into our family.

Jax was always the silent companion with my Nana, never failing to bring a smile to anyone he crossed. He was gentle, obedient and ever loyal to my Nana and grandfather.  He loved car rides more than anything and they could easily be spotted driving around town in my Nana’s PT cruiser. Wherever she went, he went.

Loosing an animal is no different than losing a member of the family. Jax celebrated countless Thanksgiving’s and Christmas’s with us and I saw him more than I see most people. I can’t remember a time where I wasn’t greeted by his wagging tail at the door whenever I came to visit my grandparents.

While this loss may cripple others, it only reaffirmed my Nana’s desire to help another dog in need and provide them with a forever home. There will never be another dog like Jax and we will never forget him. He blessed my grandparents with so many wonderful years of his life and brought such joy into their home. For that, I am so grateful for him and will cherish the memory of his sweet character forever.

So here’s to you, Jax. Say hello to all of the other Percival/Brower animals up in heaven, especially Macy.

  4. I can't even read this without tearing up. You're right, losing an animal is one of the hardest things someone can go through, maybe even the hardest. My dog is getting older and I know I won't be able to handle it well when he passes. These photos are so beautiful, by the way. I'm so sorry for your loss.
