A Day In: Mount Dora

Last weekend, my friend Taylor and I decided to go on a day trip to Mount Dora. We read this Buzzfeed article on the best small towns to visit in Florida and we were inspired (if you live in Florida, you’re welcome.)

One thing I always like to do when traveling is to visit Groupon or Living Social to see what deals are available in the places I want to travel. Luckily, we found a deal for $5 to go Scott’s Maze Adventures which features a 7-acre corn maze! What better way to celebrate fall than trying to find you’re way out of a corn maze - seriously, only in Florida.

So on Saturday we headed over to Long & Scott Farms and decided to try our hand at the maze. But our first stop was this cute little vendor, Cowboy Jim’s Cookies and Candies for these amazing homemade donuts and fresh squeezed lemonade (priorities people).

Then we entered the maze. The first 5 minutes were fun wandering around the maze. And then the Florida weather lived up to its reputation and the next half-hour became all about finding an exit and finding the nearest fan, water, AC or all of the above. Safe to say there were many dead ends and many “I feel like I’ve seen this corn stalk before”. In the end we made it out and practically ran to my car for the AC.

Afterwards we headed into downtown Mount Dora to explore the antique and thrift stores. I didn’t buy much but I did get my brother, who recently moved to D.C., a vintage postcard of the capitol and some other postcards for wall décor.

After lunch we walked around the lake and decided to go to Renniger’s flea and antique market. This was the only disappointment of the day as the market was more of a run down, sketchy market. It’s one of those places where you could easily see someone sleeping on the floor and wouldn’t think anything of it.

So after about 5 minutes of “where the hell are we?” we decided to leave and hit up the local Mount Dora Brewery to cap off our trip. I ordered the sampler, which comes with six samples of their craft beer, and we sat out in the beer garden. While I am a huge fan of wine I also love to sit back with a cold beer. As my favorite Founding Father, Ben Franklin may (or may not) have said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
